Children and adoption

We adopted our son, Luke, in August 2009. We have an open adoption with his birthparents and grandmother and share Luke’s milestones with them regularly. Luke’s birthparents will always hold a special spot in our heart as we know how difficult this decision was for them as they loved Luke so very much. We said in our original booklet when we were looking to adopt Luke, that we were planning to have two children. We both grew up with siblings and have always believed it is great for children to grow up with brothers and sisters – to have a playmate and companion as they grow up, and a friend (hopefully!) in teenage years and beyond, to have a shared experience as a child and into adulthood. Luke is an incredibly happy child, and very affectionate with us and with other children – he is just starting to enjoy playgroups, and trying to talk with other children (not very successfully! – but its very funny) and play with them.

Frances is very happy as a stay at home mom. Mat also works from home a lot and so he is a very active, involved dad.

We believe that adopted children should know right from the start that they were adopted, and that their birth family loved them very much when they were born and made an incredibly brave and admirable decision when choosing adoption for them. We will do everything in our power to show your child that you wanted what was best for them, and make them feel positive and happy about your decision, and love and understand you.

As adoptive parents we think that we should keep in touch with you (if you wish – it is your choice), sending pictures and letters regularly so you can be reassured and know how your child is getting along. Every child has a rich and varied culture and heritage, and we will ensure that whatever background and heritage the child comes from, it is something they will know about (even if it is different to our own) and feel proud of.
